Knelson Supports Educational Initiative
On November 5th, 2008 grade 9 students from across Canada participated in “Take a Student to Work Day” a nation-wide education and training initiative that Knelson has supported for the past 10 years.
The intent of the program is to provide an opportunity for young people to get front line exposure to the workplace by job shadowing a parent, relative or friend. This initiative is to help students explore career options and to make a connection between education and their future. It also allows them to gain an appreciation of their parent’s role in the workplace and a better understanding of how a mid-size private enterprise like Knelson operates and the how the 100+ employees contribute to the company’s success.
Each student spent a portion of the day shadowing their parent and a portion of the day was dedicated to short presentations from each department within the company including R&D, mineral laboratory, mechanical engineering, process engineering, production planning, production, logistics, sales & marketing and accounting. These 15-20 minute sessions allowed the students to see the diverse skill sets that Knelson employees possess, such as education, communication skills, thinking skills, attitude, and aptitude, and the wide variety of jobs opportunities available at Knelson.
“The sessions were thoughtful, professional, and geared to young adults. Knelson employees, did a fabulous job and really represented Knelson well” said Leslie Moore, Knelson Office Manager and program liaison.
