ALASKA, USA - On May 7th 2004, Teck Cominco Ltd. announced that it would immediately resume construction of the Pogo Gold project after a temporary halt to construction was announced mid April 2004. The Pogo project which is the first major greenfield gold mine to be developed in North America in almost a decade, is located near Delta Junction Alaska approximately 145klms. SE of Fairbanks.
"We've worked long and hard on this project and we were very concerned when the stop-work order was issued," stated Mike Fullam Knelson's Senior Project Engineer responsible for the Pogo Project.
"When we received the word to resume production of the Pogo gravity circuit, it came as welcome news to everyone at Knelson and no doubt to all the contractors that are involved in the project," added Fullam.
The gravity circuit which Fullam refers to is for the supply of two (2) fully automated KC-XD48 concentrators for the primary recovery of gold from mill discharge / cyclone feed in the grinding circuit and a single KC-CD12 to be used as a scavenger unit in the gold room on table tailings. Metallurgical testwork and mathematical modeling indicate that approximately 60% of the total gold is expected to be recovered by the gravity circuit.
Pogo is a world-class ore body containing an estimated 7 million tonnes of quartz-hosted reserves at an average grade of 16g/t of Au. The mine is expected to produce an average of 400,000 ounces of gold per annum over a 10-year mine life. Teck Cominco Ltd. is the operator of the project and will earn a 40% interest along with subsidiaries of Sumitomo Metal Mining (51%) and Sumitomo Corp. (9%) who will hold the remaining 60% interest. The Pogo Gold Mine is planned to be in operation during the first quarter of 2006.
